Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth Removal Clinic

When it comes to these third molars, a simple sense can turn to sensitivity very quickly. And that can be a problem in many ways, right from infection or decay to crowding, thus leading to any relapse of your past orthodontic treatment. Like any other tooth, a partially or fully erupted wisdom teeth can lead to pain and sometimes severe swelling that can increase the possibilities of any other issues. Hence, if not removed at the right time, wisdom teeth can push or cause decay in the adjacent tooth or cause a fresh front tooth crowding.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

With the human jaw size getting smaller, due to evolution, much of the population do not have enough room for wisdom teeth. Hence, it is for the best that these are removed well within time if issues arise. Therefore, when you partake in our consultation appointment, your dentist will discuss with you about the type of extraction as well as all the potential risks attached.

Majorly, ‘simple extraction’ can be identified with upper wisdom teeth removal, which in comparison to lower wisdom tooth is a little more difficult and requires special attention and care even into its planning phase. However, in the case of expected difficult extraction, the dentist will plan to remove your wisdom tooth with a surgical type of extraction. Understanding this, Local Dental was proactive in investing in one of the first CBCT (Cone Beam CT scan) in Riverina which allowed us to diagnose and plan for any possible risks and minimize their possibilities.

FAQ's

Wisdom teeth can also push the entire arch of teeth out of their correct position. So, it is for the best to remove them. What are some of the common and uncommon risks to wisdom tooth extraction?

First and foremost, the most common post-operative complications are pain, swelling and bruising. It is not always that an extraction results in one of these risks, but sometimes even a slight inconvenience can lead to exceptional cases suffering from damaged nerves, adjacent teeth/fillings, sinus, or a jaw fracture, alongside a likelihood of leaving a root in place.

Mostly, following the post-operation guidelines imminently can help you manage any possible outcomes.

Can any medicines be suggested for the same, that are easily available at a local pharmacy?

Yes. One can take an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory pill such as Nurofen, or a replacement with similar contents. It will help in relieving the pain/swelling as compared to any analgesics such as Panadol alone. Usually, some combination of both can manage the pain. Although it is for the best to always consult with your dentist before taking any such medication.

Particularly for bruising, an intermittent application of ice pack is recommended. But make sure that you do not apply it for too long as that can reduce the blood supply to the area leading to a dry socket.

What do you mean by a dry socket and why does it occur?

Dry socket is a condition when the blood clot in the extraction is disintegrated and the underlying bone is exposed and dry. It can be quite painful and sometime even more so than a regular toothache.

Normally occurring within the first 2-3 days after extraction, it can sometimes take up to 2 weeks to improve. It can be hard to predict the reason for the same, but if you have been a smoker or have indulged for an extended period in the past, your risk factor is predictably on the higher side.

How can this condition of dry socket be prevented?

It can be prevented by abiding to post-operation instructions. If you have a severe pain three days after the extraction and there is no relief from the induced pain, ensure that a dentist is immediately notified, who will then place an Alveogyl dressing (dry socket dressing) for your relaxation.

Are there any chances of post-operative infections?

Although, it is much less likely to happen, infection can occur due to previously existing condition, smoking, alcohol, difficult extraction, food impaction and improper cleaning. Generally, the maximum a patient needs to deal with is contained within the brackets of swelling and bruising.

What is the best way to avoid any infection?

Keep the removal site clean with gentle brushing, twice a day, is the best way to avoid any kind of infection after the extraction. One can also begin with gentle rinsing after a period of three days with warm salt water. However, along with all these steps, the patients need to strictly take antibiotics, if prescribed by the dentist, and limit disturbance to the area as much as possible.
